The How of Audience Development for the Arts
by Shoshana Danoff Fanizza
I recently attended and spoke at the first annual Stage Management Association conference. Anyone who follows my content stream may have seen the posts. I won't bore you with here but available on request! Unsurprisingly I was talking about social technologies and how they can be used to make the work place more effective, productive and efficient. The work place being the rehearsal room and theatrical production process for the stagemanagement department. My career has been behind the scenes and I have to confess I haven't spared the audience much thought before working with Audiences Europe. So tell me, are audiences just a cash cow? Do you strategise about getting wallets open in exchange for cultural experience? In social media all those wallets are all individuals and thats a lot of people to talk to and keep happy.
A SURPRISE MUSICAL INTERLUDE: especially crafted for stage managers by Ken Bennett-Hunter with apologies to Irving Berlin. Performed by Beverley Klein with Steve Edis on keyboard.
Here you are the audience. If you can't articulate what you want how can you expect your audience to express themselves. When were you an audience member last?
What single piece of advise would you give to anyone trying to attract an audience to an event?
Don't forget we also have a selection of resources. Check out the Book Shelf. Do you have a favourite web resource you'd like to share?
Enjoy the musical interlude
exit stage left!
